Subjects

English

The overarching with overall is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping students with a strong command of the spoken and written word. This includes: punctuation, spelling & grammar, taught at a higher and advanced level of the National Curriculum.

Vocabulary

Higher and advanced vocabulary knowledge is paramount for reading and writing. We enhance students vocabulary and teach them relationships between words, and how to develop their understanding of, and ability to use, figurative language.

Maths

Maths is one of the most important subjects taught in schools throughout all the years. For students to increase their chances of academic success, they must have a strong foundation in Maths. At Learn Log we provide our students with exactly this through tailored lessons designed to not only significantly improve on topics that students might need additional support on, but also enhance their overall understanding of each topic.

Creative Writing

Our creative writing teaches advanced writing skills which can be used for the preparation of the 11 Plus Grammar and Independent school examinations. Some of the aspects we will be looking at will be how we structure and present work, different characters and settings, how we describe them when we write, using exciting openers to enhance our writing and draw the reader in, using conjunctions to extend our sentences and make them more sophisticated and using all punctuation and particularly focusing on the use of colons and semicolons. Using figurative language to bring our story to life including: simile, metaphor, alliteration, hyperbole, onomatopoeia and personification.

Verbal Reasoning

Verbal Reasoning is best described as a subject that is designed to test the ability of students to both effectively use and understand words in context. This consists of questions to test a student logical deduction skills, their ability to decipher codes and also mathematical questions.

Verbal Reasoning is largely language-based problem-solving and your child will need a broad vocabulary and good grasp of English grammar to be successful in this subject.

Non-verbal Reasoning

Non-Verbal Reasoning, is best described as a subject that tests a student’s skills of observation and logic.

Non-Verbal consists of questions that give students various shapes and patterns – students will then have to identify two that are most similar, odd ones out, a missing shape from the series given etc. Students will need to have an understating of symmetry, shapes and reflection.

Non-Verbal Reasoning questions are symbol and picture-based. They test a child’s ability to understand and remember a visual sequence, interpret the meaning of the visual presentation, find the ‘odd one out’, solve codes and missing sequence patterns. Here at Learn Log we teach and encourage these skills to develop. Practice and perseverance are needed to succeed and at Learn Log we support your child during this journey.
